“Legality and merit in schools”: the Luiss project

Over twenty institutes including classical, scientific and artistic high schools, professional technicians from all over Italy, three juvenile penal institutions (of Catania, Florence and Milan) confronted on the issues of legality with 133 ‘Luiss ambassadors’ and a team of doctoral students, research fellows , tutors, belonging to the 4 departments of the university named after Guido Carli. These are the numbers with which the fourth edition of the “Legality and Merit in schools” project, conceived by the vice president of Luiss Paola Severino to promote the culture of anti-corruption and respect for the rules among university students and high school pupils in areas difficult of the country.

The Luiss project

A project in which Luiss is committed to sensitize young people to the issues of justice and merit starting from school and to fuel the dialogue on the culture of legality, particularly in the period of the pandemic, from the economic and social risks of illegality to the power of network on disinformation, from undeclared work to cyber-crime. The path of virtual meetings and remote lessons was inaugurated on February 18 with the Minister of Education Patrizio Bianchi and ended today with the awarding of the finalist projects and the renewal of the memorandum of understanding between the institutions promoting the project which, born in 2017, it has the support of the Ministries of Education and Justice, the Higher Council of the Judiciary, the Anti-corruption Authority and the National Anti-Mafia Directorate.

The interventions

The interventions of the ministers at the closing event Patrician Bianchi e Maria Cristina Messa, of the anti-mafia prosecutor Federico Cafiero de Raho, of the president of the ANAC Giuseppe Busia, the messages of the minister of justice Marta Cartabia and the vice president of the CSM David Ermini. The four winning projects received a prize from the Ministry of Education for the purchase of teaching material, while Luiss made 22 scholarships available. From this year, the project has benefited from the support of Inwit with the allocation of two other scholarships for enrollment and attendance of a three-year course and a single-cycle master’s degree at Luiss.

The winning projects

In third place the juvenile penal institute of Florence with the project “My truth”. Second to parts goes to the Higher Institute “Europe” of Pomigliano d’Arco with the work entitled “Sons of the fires” and the Iis “Duni-Levi” of Matera with the project “An almost perfect world“. In first place the higher education institute “Melchiorre Delfico – Guido Montauti” of Teramo, with the work entitled “Gambling as a hypothesis of self-laundering”.

Severino: school and training pillars of the restart

“In a complex period like the one we are living in, school and training are the essential pillars for the restart of our country and the growth of an entire generation of young people, already heavily penalized by the crisis triggered by the pandemic – said Severino – The project” Legality and merit in schools’ wants to continue the commitment in the fight against corruption and in compliance with the rules, contrasting early school leaving and any obstacle to educational pathways. This initiative, built by our university with the invaluable support of the highest Italian institutions, has the ambition to intercept the dreams and needs of girls and boys, to understand, enhance and reward them, investing with confidence in their future “.
