On the evening of October 21, the official Weibo of the Chaoyang Branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau of the Communist Party of China notified that 39-year-old Li Yundi had been administratively detained by the branch for prostitution. Judging from the CCP’s official media reports, Li Yundi was reported by the “Chaoyang Masses” in Beijing.
Regarding this official move, on October 22, Professor Han Xu of Sichuan University Law School questioned whether the official should inform the public about this administrative violation. He said that throughout the inspection of relevant laws and regulations, no one stipulates that the public security organs have the right to report to the society when they impose administrative penalties. He also said that this practice is a disguised deprivation of citizens’ personality rights.
In the Li Yundi incident, on the evening of the 21st, he quickly became the top two in the hot search on Weibo and Baidu in mainland China. At the same time, many official media of the Chinese Communist Party have been encircling and suppressing, verbal and penalizing. After the incident, a number of CCP institutions or government departments related to it have “expressed their views.” For example, the Chinese Musicians Association canceled Li Yundi’s membership; the China Performance Industry Association issued an announcement requesting member units to boycott Li Yundi; its alma mater Sichuan Conservatory of Music removed the “Li Yundi Piano Studio” brand; Guangzhou municipal government terminated the hiring of Li Yundi As “the spokesperson for the image of Guangzhou city”.
Li Yundi was arrested, his acting career was greatly affected, and his related works were also “off the shelves”, and the related introductions and scenes of his programs were mosaicked or directly deleted. In recent years, Li Yundi has more than ten endorsement brands, including luxury watches, automobiles, audio and other high-end brands. This incident may cause him to face a huge default fee.
Li Yundi was once praised by the Chinese Communist Party
Li Yundi, born in 1982, is a native of Chongqing and a piano player. In 2000, 18-year-old Li Yundi won the gold medal in the 14th Chopin International Piano Competition. As the 12th and 13th gold medal winners of the competition are absent. Therefore, Li Yundi’s award was touted by the CCP media.
Li Yundi is also a “musician” recognized by CCTV. In 2001, at the age of 19, he appeared on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala. As of 2021, Li Yundi has appeared on the show five times.
In 2007, Li Yundi won official red titles such as “China’s Top Ten Young Leaders”, “National May Fourth Youth Ambassador”, and “Shenzhen Volunteer Image Ambassador”.
During Bo Xilai’s administration in Chongqing, in 2008, Li Yundi served as the vice chairman of the Chongqing Youth Federation; in 2009, he served as the image spokesperson for Chongqing city; in 2011, he served as the Chongqing environmental protection image ambassador.
The Chinese Communist Party’s official media once reported that in Chongqing, Li Yundi is the city’s name card. In 2009, he was selected as one of the “Chongqing City Image Ambassadors”, and the then Municipal Party Committee Secretary Bo Xilai personally handed him the card.
On the evening of June 25, 2011, Li Yundi held the first concert of the Li Yundi Red Piano World Tour for the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China in Chongqing. Twenty piano boys selected as “Future Stars” played red songs with Li Yundi.

Current political commentator Zhou Xiaohui said that judging from the immediate response of the Chinese Communist Party’s official media and the consistent crackdown on tarts and the rapid rush to hot searches, it is obvious that the authorities have arranged a unified action in advance, and such operations are common in many popular events in the past, and they are not uncommon behind the scenes. Zhou Xiaohui believes that the most direct consequence of the incident being exposed is that Li Yundi’s artistic career has been temporarily put to a halt, because he, who was labeled as a “bad artist”, would have been unable to participate in any public performances under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party unless he was accidentally.
