“Locking ourselves in the house again means blaming us”

Agnese, 9, writes to the presidents of the Republic, Government and Piedmont “I cried a lot, now I ask you to let us return to our classes soon”

IVREA

In the two pages written by Agnese Tirassa, a 9-year-old student from Ivrea, there is all the anger and frustration of a generation of children and teenagers locked up at home following the lessons on a screen. Agnese, who attends the fourth grade of the Fiorana school, took a pen and paper to contact the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella directly, the Prime Minister Mario Draghi and the President of the Piedmont Region Alberto Cirio. She explains to them that she and her companions have always respected the anti-contagion rules and that the new lockdown that forces them into Dad comes after a year of sacrifices and drops the blame for what is happening on them.

«Dear President, I have decided to write you this letter to let you know how I feel. Last night when I heard on the news that we were starting to be Dad again, after more than a year of sacrifices closed at home without seeing friends or relatives, I felt terrible and all the hope that was in me has become a waterfall of endless tears. I sat on the sofa and in the meantime I thought that I hadn’t even said goodbye to my classmates and teachers because we all thought that on Monday we would all go back to school together ».

“My class and I have always respected the rules to the end – continues Agnese – and therefore hearing that Monday we returned to Dad after all the sacrifices we had made did not seem right to close ourselves again”.

«So since you are the most important person I would like to ask you some questions – concludes the Ivrea student -. Because if it is dangerous for me to go to school, my parents have to go to work? When will I be able to hug grandmother again? Why do I wear a mask and still see people around without it? By closing the schools you blame us children but can adults roam freely? Dear President, let us go back to school as soon as possible because I miss my classmates and teachers so much ».

Agnese’s is something more than an outburst, it is an appeal that asks for answers. «I proposed to my daughter to write this letter after the announcement of the closure of the schools – explains her mother Laura Bartoletti -. I did it with the intent of getting her out of all the emotions she was feeling. As a parent I think the most frustrating thing is not having answers to our children’s questions ».

«However, I want to underline how we felt present her teachers who never abandoned us, as unfortunately happened in other realities – concludes Bartoletti -. I hope this letter makes us reflect and look, for a moment, at this whole situation with the eyes and hearts of our children ». –
