Former Lummens N-VA politician Kim Geybels draws the East Flemish list for the Flemish Parliament of the new political movement Voor U. Party chairman Els Ampe says in a conversation with De Zondag that she wants to get her out of the cancel culture.

42-year-old Kim Geybels returns to national politics with the new political movement Voor U. “Kim will be our party leader for the Flemish Parliament in East Flanders. Voor U welcomes a strong woman with expertise in healthcare and childcare,” says party chairman Els Ampe.

Geybels was elected to the Senate on the N-VA list in the June 2010 elections. She also became chairman of Jong N-VA that summer. In August of that year, however, she and her then boyfriend – who was also active in N-VA – came under fire after a drug purchase in Thailand went wrong. She then called on the help of then Senate President Danny Pieters, asking him to contact the Belgian embassy. She was then put back on the plane. Once back in the country, a meeting followed with the top of the N-VA, at which Geybels resigned as senator. She was also expelled from the party.

A few days later she reversed that dismissal. According to the emergency doctor, this was possible because her successor had not yet taken the oath. But the Senate did not follow that reasoning. A long legal dispute eventually ended before the European Court of Human Rights, which awarded her moral damages and costs.

Els Ampe, the party chairman of Voor U, is delighted with the new party leader: “Kim Geybels’ noted passage in the Senate was suddenly canceled fourteen years ago. Her journey through the political desert consisted of a successful career as an emergency physician and deputy chief physician in the Flemish Ardennes. In the meantime, she has been vindicated by the European Court of Human Rights in her lawsuit against the Belgian state for the premature end of her political mandate. We fight the cancel culture. Kim Geybels fits perfectly in our fight against particracy,” says Ampe.

Given her expertise, Geybels wants to concentrate on the healthcare policy domain. “Care from baby to elderly is a core task of the government, where the available resources must be distributed as fairly and usefully as possible. I have been able to see with my own eyes where our healthcare system is failing despite or even because of enormous support structures, and I want to dedicate myself with heart and soul to the optimal organization of our healthcare,” says Geybels.
