A 28-year-old from Bad Gandersheim (Northeim district) was blackmailed after sending intimate photos. As the police announced on Sunday, the man had fallen for a fake profile of a woman. He was asked by unknown perpetrators to transfer a four-figure sum, it was said. Otherwise the photos would be sent to his social media circle of friends. The 28-year-old did not comply with the request and filed a complaint. The scam the man fell for is called sextortion: fake profiles are used to write to people on social media and ask them to send intimate photos in sexually charged chats. The perpetrators then blackmail their victims. The police advise not to send any money and to file a report.
