Mannheim. An abandoned suitcase paralyzed Mannheim’s main train station until around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday morning. The ban has now been lifted. Previously, no trains stopped at the main station, from around 11.45 a.m. only platforms 7/8 and 9/10 remained closed.

After special forces opened the abandoned suitcase, the contents turned out to be harmless.

According to the police, initially only platforms 4 to 12 were closed, later the blocking was extended to the entire station. The piece of luggage was found on one of the platforms around 7:30 a.m.

Delays and partial failures were the result, as Deutsche Bahn announced on Twitter: “The trains will initially stop at the nearest suitable station and wait there for the duration of the route closure or will be diverted if possible,” it said. At around 12.30 p.m., Deutsche Bahn announced via Twitter that subsequent delays and short-term cancellations were still possible.

The abandoned suitcase also had an impact on the B 36. The connection to the south of the main station was blocked between Helmut Schmidt Bridge and Gontardstraße. The Lindenhof underpass for pedestrians, which remained closed longer than the B36, was also affected.

Employees of the station mission inform passengers

Employees of the station mission provided information in front of the main station and spoke to passengers. “People are stressed and annoyed, but that’s understandable,” said one employee, but they were “polite and thank us.”

No train service between Mannheim and Ludwigshafen

As the railway announced on Twitter, no trains ran between Mannheim Hbf and Ludwigshafen Hbf. There were also delays and partial failures in the entire S-Bahn network.

There was extra Replacement bus services in the direction of Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen. For long-distance journeys, the railway station mission recommended using Heidelberg Central Station.
