Many for the last greeting to the writer Maurensig

TAVAGNACCO. That with life is a game of chess that is not always won, but between the folds of that game, a metaphor for the contrast between good and evil, Paolo Maurensig has plumbed the human soul and fixed it in the novels that have it delivered to an eternal present. This is why a grateful and moved Friuli Venezia Giulia greeted him on Tuesday 1 June in the parish church of Feletto Umberto.

No official speeches, applause or flower decorations among those 140 internal seats limited by the pandemic and the chairs in the churchyard, it was a sober and essential farewell, that to Maurensig, a bit like him who traveled and wrote with the lights out , reaching the reader’s heart.

He, who with his late and fulminating debut in 1993 gave birth to one of the most solid long sellers of recent Italian literature, entrusting his fruitful vein to the written word that has merged into many literary matryoshkas that make his words come alive and defy time.

A pillow of red roses by his wife Sonia Zuri, faithful life partner, a white one of his uncles on the pine coffin, and the homily of Don Marcin Gazzetta, who chose a metaphor from the pages of the Old Testament to compare the life of Maurensig to a book. “Oh, if my words were written, if they were fixed in a book, were imprinted with an iron stylus on the lead, forever engraved on the rock” we read in the book of Job.

“Through his stories, Paolo wrote the book of his life – said Fr Marcin Gazzetta – a rich, shared and generous life and today with us he writes the last page on which we can express gratitude for what he has given us as a man and gratitude for what he left us as a writer and a lover of beauty ».

A few words to sum up his life in front of the faithful, his Gorizia and Central European roots, which Maurensig defined as «a style, an attitude, a spleen». Then the Milanese parenthesis and the transfer to Feletto. His passion for music – a family legacy -, for photography and for writing which he compared to a game of chess with the unconscious: “Broken the first surface of ice – his words – no one knows how deep abysmal we will be able to descend ».

And it is always through his words, almost a spiritual testament, that the priest wanted to remember him: “If a man’s life is nothing more than a succession of frames, similar to an interminable film, at what point, I wonder, can we consider ourselves truly accomplished? Certainly not with death. We arrive at that beautiful and ready by sheer force of inertia »he wrote.

Profound words that Fr Marcin Gazzetta invited those present to accept in order to accompany Maurensig “on the other side”, entrusting him to a religious dimension in which he believed. Listening to them, in addition to relatives, many friends, from Giorgio Celiberti who paid him homage in the mortuary, to Mario Turello, Alberto Frappa Raunceroy, Michele Meloni Tessitori, Paolo Carbonetto, who attended the funeral, together with municipal and regional administrators, present and passed, from the regional councilor Gibelli, to the municipal councilor Cigolot with the mayor of Udine Fontanini and Tavagnacco Lirutti, up to Honsell and Cecotti. –
