Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will be party leader for her right-wing populist party Fratelli d’Italia in the June European elections. She announced this on Sunday at a major conference of her party in the city of breaking latest news on the Adriatic Sea.

However, her leading position does not mean that Meloni Rome, who has been ruling since October 2022, will replace the European institutions in Brussels. Opposition leader Elly Schlein of the social democratic PD and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia are also party leaders, but it is not expected that they will actually become Members of the European Parliament. By using their presidents as draft horses, the Italian parties want to mobilize more voters. Romano Prodi, the former president of the European Commission, has already strongly criticized this practice.

In a poll published on Sunday in the newspaper La Stampa, Fratelli d’Italia received more than 27 percent of the votes. That is approximately the percentage that the post-fascist party turned out in the 2022 elections in Italy.

After her 2022 success in her own country, 47-year-old Meloni also wants to send left-wing parties to the opposition benches in Europe. Since she became prime minister, Italy has once again become a “protagonist” in Europe, with a strong influence on migration policy. She also praised the fact that Fratelli d’Italia stands up for the family and Christian values.
