Miami: A driver mistook the South Beach boardwalk for a road and fell into the water

Confusion and chaos unfolded at South Pointe Park in Miami on Sunday morning as a vehicle ended up in the water after its driver, seemingly intoxicated, mistook the boardwalk for a road.

According to witnesses, the driver allegedly accelerated before plunging into the water near the iconic lighthouse sculpture on South Beach. Andrés Asion, a local resident, described the scene to media outlets, stating that the driver had just left a bar and was under the impression that the boardwalk was a road.

The driver, who has not been identified by authorities, was reportedly alone in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Following a breathalyzer test on-site, it was confirmed that the driver was in an apparent state of intoxication.

Government Cut divers conducted a search of the area and found no one else in the vehicle. The moment when a crane extracted the submerged car from the water was captured by Infobae photographers.

Law enforcement officers present at the scene were informed by witnesses that the driver was speeding and lost control while attempting to make a turn, ultimately leading to the vehicle ending up in the water.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 in an effort to gather more details and shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

As this story continues to develop, more information is expected to emerge about the events that transpired at South Pointe Park on Sunday morning.
