In a forceful military operation carried out in the Colombian department of Nariño, the Military Forces and the Police reported the death of at least nine members of the Second Marquetalia, one of the main dissidents of the FARC. The fighting, which broke out this Wednesday, left a favorable balance for the authorities in their fight against illegal armed groups operating in the country.
According to the statement issued by the Military Forces, during the operation a considerable arsenal of firearms, ammunition, communications and quartermaster material was seized, which represents a significant blow to the illegal finance subsystem of the armed structure, under the criminal orders of the ringleader known as ‘Allende’, who leads the Alfonso Cano Bloc of the Second Marquetalia.
This success in the military offensive against FARC dissidents in southwestern Colombia has been described by the Army as one of the most important actions to date. The area where the clashes took place is located in a rural area between the municipalities of Roberto Payán and Mosquera, where operations still continue.
The Colombian armed forces have maintained an intense offensive against FARC dissidents, including both the Second Marquetalia and the Central General Staff (EMC), both groups involved in the Government’s “total peace” initiative. Although a bilateral ceasefire had been established between the Government and the EMC at the beginning of the year, the latter group carried out an attack against an indigenous community, which resulted in the suspension of the truce in three Colombian departments as a response measure.
It is important to remember that the Second Marquetalia had been the subject of previous announcements related to peace negotiations, although so far neither the date nor the exact place to hold said talks has been determined.
The military operation in Nariño reflects the continued commitment of the Colombian authorities in their fight against illegal armed groups and in the search for stability and security in the country.
