Minister of Security celebrates the alleged effectiveness of the anti-violence policy

The Minister of Justice and Security, Gustavo Villatoro, assured on Friday the effectiveness of the Security policy applied by the government of Nayib Bukele.

During an interview on the “Frente a Frente” program of the Salvadoran Telecorporation (TCS), Villatoro highlighted a supposed achievement of 365 days without homicides in the present Administration.

“It is a historic transformation in terms of security,” he said, and went further by ensuring that “97 percent of homicides in the country previously went unpunished,” he said.

The official did not explain what situational universe that 97 percent was defending against.

Villatoro detailed some actions undertaken by the authorities and asserted that the Territorial Control Plan is a “well-developed” strategy that is not given by the improvisation of its different stages, as accused by the country’s political opposition.

“The 365 days without homicides are the result of effective measures,” the headline pointed out, highlighting the strategy used that allowed the capture of more than 68,579 gang members and other logistics used by the “maras.”

“There are more than a thousand captured gang leaders and 10 of the leaders at the national level. We are taking steps to capture others who left the country and are hiding in neighboring nations,” he said.

Villatoro described as “romantic” the requests of organizations that demand the application of the “universal” policy of rehabilitation of the inmates, which the government plan lacks in its fight against the gangs.

According to human rights organizations, thousands of innocent people are imprisoned.

The government of the Republic has launched a million-dollar campaign extolling the supposed results achieved during the supposed 365 days without murders.

The president of the Legislative Assembly, Ernesto Castro, added to the praise, who recalled that “until mid-2019 we were the most violent nation in the world. There were 120,000 homicides after the so-called peace agreements. So many generations lost to gang violence, to cowardly governments that handed over territories to them.”

Castro said that from the Legislature, the Nuevas Ideas bench will maintain the commitment with Salvadorans to guarantee the governability that the Executive needs to continue implementing strategies in various areas, with the aim of promoting national development.
