Borgerhout –
Unknown persons committed an attack in Borgerhout on Sunday night. A front door of an apartment was completely destroyed. No one was injured and police have started an investigation. “I understand that all the neighbors are now looking at us suspiciously, but I can only say that I am a hard worker,” responds the owner of the apartment.
The explosion occurred at around 3:30 am in Collegelaan in Borgerhout. The perpetrators managed to gain access to the building by forcing the door. Once inside, they detonated an explosive in the hallway. The front door of the targeted apartment was completely destroyed. The damage is extensive in the apartment itself.
The perpetrators immediately fled. Fortunately, no one was injured. The Antwerp police set up a perimeter. The judicial lab and demining service Dovo arrived on site for further investigation. The circumstances and context of the attack are still being investigated further; it is not clear at the moment whether there is a renewed conflict in the drug environment.
Door forced earlier
A couple with young children lives in the apartment in question. “Their bedroom is just next to the front door, they were of course in a huge panic last night after that huge bang. I took them to school this morning, but it’s not going to be a good day for them either,” says their mother.
The couple says they don’t know why someone wants to target them. “I understand that all the neighbors are now looking at us suspiciously, but I can only say that I am a hard worker. Fortunately, the neighbors know that too,” the couple’s husband continues. “I have absolutely nothing to do with the drug world or the port, I am active in the construction sector.”
The perpetrators probably wanted to strike the night before. “On Saturday morning we noticed that an attempt had been made to force the door open, but that had not been successful,” the man said. “We still thought that someone had wanted to steal bicycles from the hallway. A day later they used brute force to smash the front door completely open.”
