The former presidential candidate for the ARENA party, Norman Quijano, was sentenced this morning to serve 13 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of electoral fraud and illicit groups.
The 2nd Criminal Chamber of San Salvador handed down a sentence after the trial ended, in which the accused was not present, because he enjoys immunity as a deputy owner of Parlacen.
Quijano was also disqualified from holding the position of deputy that he currently holds, representing Arena.
«This morning, former deputy Norman Quijano received a sentence of 13 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of electoral fraud and illicit groups. The sentence has been imposed by the 2nd Criminal Chamber of San Salvador, which has also disqualified him from holding the position he currently holds,” said the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.
The Prosecutor’s Office was able to verify during the trial that the former presidential candidate met with gang members from the MS13 and Barrio 18 in offices located in the Flor Blanca neighborhood where he offered them money in exchange for votes in the second round of the 2014 presidential elections. accusations are supported by videos that were recorded and provided by a qualified witness.
The former president of the Legislative Assembly also promised to provide economic benefits and make government investments in areas controlled by the gangs, as long as they voted for his candidacy and he won the elections. Finally, the winner of that electoral process was Professor Salvador Sánchez Cerén, of the FMLN.
He also promised gang members economic benefits, reducing the level of police operations against gangs and increasing the General Budget of the Nation for reintegration programs in favor of gangs.
Quijano has an arrest warrant for this case, since 2022.
