An eighty-year-old nun left a suitcase containing the remains of her deceased friend on the street in the Chilean capital Santiago. The police started an investigation.

“The person died a year ago and the other kept her in a suitcase since then because of the affection she had for her,” a police official said. The police do not suspect foul play.

The suitcase was found on Monday by a garbage collector, who put the suitcase back when he noticed the stench. After the discovery, panic arose among residents of the city, which has a high crime rate. Police found the woman after studying video footage.

Pact

The two friends are said to have forged a pact, authorities say. The Chilean nun told police that she and her friend, also a nun, had agreed to remain together after their deaths. The deceased friend would have been 58 years old and died of illness.

The nun was not arrested but faces sanction under public health rules for failing to inform authorities of her friend’s death so she could be buried or cremated.
