Orbán’s government sent millions of euros to football academies in Slovakia last year. Organizations connected with politicians also received subsidies

The Hungarian economy managed to get out of a twelve-month recession only in November 2023, but Hungarian foreign organizations, including those in Slovakia, did not feel these economic difficulties very much. And some of the supported entities even have a good year behind them.

The largest item in the subsidies of the Hungarian government, in addition to the support of education in Hungarian schools, is represented by football academies.

Many organizations in Slovakia also received support from Hungary last year, without which they could practically not function. A large sum was given, for example, to the scouts or to a hitherto unknown civil association, which received 700,000 euros to establish an institute for public opinion research.

We do not yet know how much money was approved last year through the Gábor Bethlen Fund (FGB) for Hungarian organizations in Slovakia, but based on the published decisions, it can be seen that a few organizations received higher support than usual in 2023.

For years, the Hungarian government has been supporting Hungarian organizations abroad with amounts of several million euros. Also in 2023, the Gábor Bethlen Fund, responsible for supporting Hungarians abroad, approved subsidies in the amount of several million euros through various programs for Hungarian organizations in Slovakia, among which several can function exclusively thanks to this money.

In 2023, the Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, three football academies, the J. Selye University in Komárno, the cultural association Csemadok, as well as the foundation that runs the Magyar7 weekly and the ma7.sk portal received hundreds of thousands to millions of euros in 2023.

However, ProRegia Cultura, the Union of Scouts of Hungarian nationality and OZ Pro Unitas also received hundreds of thousands of dollars in support from the Hungarian state.
