Matteo Salvini may not stand as a candidate in the municipal elections of Milan. Certainly, it will not be leaders as it should have been. The announcement was made by the leader of the Carroccio himself before participating in a debate on justice issues in Milan together with the new candidate for mayor, Luca Bernardo. “Half of the Lega’s list for Palazzo Marino will be open to women and men of the city without a party card in their pocket. This – announced the party leader – this is new for us ”. And he added that he himself is “looking for a better leader than me”.
Matteo Salvini was elected municipal councilor at Palazzo Marino for the first time in 1993, when the League won with the race for Palazzo Marino Marco Formentini. Since then, Salvini has remained on the benches of the council chamber until 2018 when, having become vice president of the board and minister of the interior of the yellow-green government, he left his place to the young Northern League player Gabriele Luigi Abbiati. For months it was speculated that Salvini could even have run as a candidate against Giuseppe Sala, which then did not happen because the choice fell on a civic name, the pediatrician Luca Bernardo, today at his first public outing right next to Salvini. However, the candidacy of the former Minister of the Interior as league leaders seemed to be taken for granted: this may not be the case. In addition, wanting to list people who do not have party cards – in particular the League – could also call into question the candidacies of Alessandro Morelli, current deputy minister of infrastructure and also already elected to the City Council, and also of Silvia Sardone, a Northern League MEP who in 2018, applied to the Lombardy Region, collected about 12 thousand preferences, earning the nickname of “Lady Preferences”.
As for the race for mayor at Palazzo Marino, after Bernardo’s choice, the question of the team remains open: for Salvini, the official presentation of the Milan mayoral candidate for the center-right, Luca Bernardo, and that of his team “will be next week. We are working to organize it next Thursday or Friday to have everyone present ”. According to Salvini, it will be a “team of 4, 5, 6 people who come from the world of professions, with an act of humility. I will work for Albertini to be part of the team ”. Although on the role of the team Salvini specified that the components “will not be future councilors”.
