Sassari coast: Punta Bianca in the hands of vandals

The historic beach in a state of neglect for two years. Ordinance of the Municipality to restore security

SASSARI. The showcase is extraordinary, on the beach of Platamona facing the Gulf of Asinara. Privileged position, so much so that until it was in operation it was a favorite place for tourists and residents who wanted to spend a day at the beach taking advantage of services that are essential for those who do not like improvisation and do-it-yourself solutions. For about two years, however, the Lido Punta Bianca, in via della Torre, has been in a state of complete abandonment, targeted by vandals and cannibalized. What was not stolen ended up in pieces scattered on the sand in front of the bathhouse.

It is not just about degradation, however, there is also a safety issue. So much so that after the inspection of the local police which also documented the seriousness of the situation, the Municipality of Sassari in early March issued an ordinance (on the proposal of the general management) which certifies the state of abandonment and danger of the Lido Punta Bianca and said a series of conditions to start the rehabilitation and remediation operations with immediate effect. The provision signed by the mayor Nanni Campus was notified to the Agenzia del Demanio, regional management for Sardinia; to the Directorate General of Local Authorities and Finance and to the Port Authority of Porto Torres, each for the duties of competence.

The bathhouse in via della Torre had closed its doors at the end of August 2020, after the alert was triggered on the beach because one of the waitresses on duty at Lido Punta Bianca had tested positive for Covid. Those were difficult times, of great emergency with the pandemic that was much scarier than today. The facility had been evacuated and then closed pending new initiatives. But since then a situation of evident precariousness has begun, with the continuous incursions of vandals and thieves who have become the masters of the structure. In the meantime, the state concession – which belonged to a company in Rome – expired on December 31, 2020 and the Municipality of Sassari took the situation in hand to try to save the season and offer a concrete opportunity for the plant to restart. Meanwhile around the Lido Punta Bianca, following the intervention of the local police, a temporary fence had been set up to delimit the area and signal danger, also to discourage the incursions of vandals and those who entered the plant also to take the equipment and use them on the beach. From the investigations of the local police, several fire attempts had also emerged, with consequences that could have been particularly serious.

The trade union ordinance also highlighted the economic value and the “relevance of the services provided in an area of great attendance, especially in the summer months”, and therefore the need to ensure that “the plant could be used as soon as possible time, possibly within the summer season ». Just recently, minimal interventions have been carried out to make the structure and areas of the Lido Punta Bianca safe. Now it remains to be seen whether the plant will actually be operational again by the summer.
