A speech by the American president is expected today Joe Biden to announce the total withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan by 11 September this year. By the expiration of that symbolic date, twenty years after the attack on New York and the Pentagon planned by al Qaeda in Afghanistan, the number of American soldiers will have dropped to zero – and therefore, most likely, the other foreign contingents including that Italians will have already left the country. Americans have political reasons to quit, they cannot bear the burden and costs of an endless military presence that is always difficult to justify in front of public opinion. There are 2,500 American soldiers in Afghanistan at the moment, therefore very few, and they do not go into combat but only have support roles. You need to be realistic about what will happen when they are gone.
