Red Devils Set. Around 1956, the activity of the “Los Diablos Rojos” Ensemble began in Loja, directed by the accordionist Ángel Medardo Luzuriaga González and made up of José Chiriboga (saxophone), Alfredo Palacio (tumbas), Carlos Alvarado (drums) and Franco Loaiza ( vocalist); Later, Stefan Valarezo (clarinet) joined, replacing José Chiriboga, and Ángel Jaramillo (drums) replaced Carlos Alvarado.

The first presentation took place on the occasion of the visit of the Queen of Ecuador, Anabell Nebel Herberner, a nice lady from Guayaquil, who was invited to Loja for the city’s November anniversary festivities, and, at the event prepared in her honor, held in the Provincial Council hall with the attendance of the neighborhood queens, the gala ball was entertained by Los Diablos Rojos. The group remained in activity for nearly four years, fulfilling contracts in the main cantons of our province, as well as the province of El Oro, such as Zaruma, Piñas and Portovelo. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree at the Bernardo Valdivieso school, the musician Medardo Luzuriaga moved to Quito to continue his music studies at the National Conservatory; Similarly, the saxophonist Pepe Chiriboga also emigrated to the capital of the Republic in 1959 (Jaramillo Ruiz, BCE).

I remember the following about this group: Don Medardo Luzuriaga’s family lived on Diez de Agosto Street, next to the bridge over the Malacatos River, which at that time was known as “Santa Rosa Bridge”; Every day, I walked along the path of Don Medardo’s house, because the Military Zone was located in front and it was prohibited to walk through said place; That is why several times I was able to listen to the reviews of the group and also see some characters enter or leave the house, which allowed me to know their physiognomy very well, among them, the young Adriano López Mejía, who participated in the reviews in vocalist quality; Mr. Ángel Jaramillo, who also had his residence in the Cuarto Centenario neighborhood where I lived with my family, and I saw him frequently moving along Diez de Agosto Street.

Mr. Carlos Alvarado, whose main profession was that of a hairdresser, with his establishment located on Diez de Agosto Street, between 18 de Noviembre and Sucre, was the father of two young men, the youngest named José, who was my classmate. classroom at the Bernardo Valdivieso school, and the elder Carlos, the same one who specialized in the performance of the requinto and formed the trio “Los Juveniles”, with Edmundo Guerrero on the first voice and guitar, Juan Gordón on the second voice and guitar, performing on weekends on various radio stations in our city. After a short time Edmundo Guerrero retired and was replaced by the young singer from Loja Mercy Aguirre, and soon the group had the opportunity to record a 45 rpm record, having printed on one side a passage, the author of which was Mr. José Coronel Illescas, owner of the radio station “Centinela del Sur”, a song that achieved impressive success that season.
