Sudan, the arrested Venetian entrepreneur remains in prison. Family members: “He has been in inhumane conditions for 70 days”

Marco Zennaro remains in prison, the 46-year-old entrepreneur from Veneto who has been detained in Sudan since 1 April for alleged fraud. After spending several days in an Omdurman prison cell. In fact, Zennaro’s family explained that “after the days of detention at the Omdurman prison in a more organized condition than the situation of the first weeks, albeit always difficult, yesterday Marco was brought again before the Court and was transferred back to police station “. And again the man, who in Italy has a wife and three small children, is faced with “inhumane conditions”. As his younger brother Alvise explains, “Marco lives in an environment where there are 50 degrees, given the 46 outside, without a bed or a mattress, without having the opportunity to meet anyone for a visit, without even being able to move and with very little air exchange “. In addition, “the prosecutor has decided to order a further preliminary integration. Therefore Marco will have to spend other days, we don’t know how many, in these inhuman conditions ”.

Zennaro had flown to Sudan in mid-March to settle a business affair: the electrical transformers produced by his company, in fact, were found, after a check, to be inadequate and the buyer – Ayman Gallabi, an intermediary who had bought them on behalf of the electricity company of state, Sedec – had reported him for fraud. A few days after his arrival in the country, therefore, Zennaro – who had been in business with Sudan for over 25 years with his company – had been placed under house arrest in a hotel, guarded by the military. On 1 April, he was transferred to a cell in the Khartoum police station where he remained for two months living in precarious hygienic and social conditions: he slept on the ground, he had no right to visits from ambassador and lawyer, he had no right to the air and for this he reported pains throughout the body. Then on 2 June Zennaro was transferred again, after a passage before the Court, and this time he was placed in a “more organized” prison in Omdurman.

Where, however, his conditions had not improved much, so much so that Zennaro had clamored to “be brought back to Italy by his family”. But for the moment this doesn’t seem to be his destiny.
