The update includes the revision of the hymnbook and“Children’s Songbook” announced by the Church in June 2018 to unite members around the world and “meet the needs of a global church.” These improvements to the music platform are preparatory for the gradual release of newly selected new music, which should begin in four languages as early as May 2024. In addition to better unifying the global Church, the overall musical effort will also increase the offering of music in other languages, both audio recordings and sheet music for solos, small groups and choirs. Improved distribution channels will help members find what’s already available in each language and see what’s new faster. Other music resources are also available on the updated site. The site is currently available in 66 languages and the app is available in 48 languages.

The Lord said to Emma Smith: “The song of the righteous is a prayer to me” (see Doctrine and Covenants 25:12) and the chapter 19 of the General Church Manual states that the Lord “has encouraged individuals and families to use uplifting music in their daily lives.” Continuous updates in the Sacred Music app and at music.ChurchofJesusChrist.org make it even easier for Latter-day Saints to worship Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through music, inviting the peace of the Spirit both at home and at church.

“Sacred music is composed to enhance home-centered, Church-supported worship, to edify the soul, and to bring people closer to God,” Elder said Isaac K. Morrison, General Authority Seventy. “The uplifting and reverent nature of these hymns creates an atmosphere that fosters spiritual communion.”

Each aspect of this Church music initiative focuses on five sacred music purposes outlined in the Church page covering ongoing revisions of the hymnbook and the “Children’s Songbook”. These purposes are:

Increase faith and worship of God, the Eternal Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Teach fundamental gospel doctrine with power and clarity. Promote joyful singing at home and in church. Comfort those who are downcast and inspire members to persevere in the faith. Uniting members throughout the Church.

Easier access to sacred music allows members to use it for the things it does best, including these purposes. As this update makes it more intuitive for members to access sacred music at home and at church, improvements in distribution channels and ongoing content updates to the library itself will together help enhance the power and clarity of the music resources they proclaim the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
