“The Government says that it has to choose between investing in education and health, or in 4G roads”: Asocapitales

The recent meeting between President Gustavo Petro and 27 mayors of capital cities, organized by Luz María Zapata, director of Asocapitales, has generated a debate on crucial issues for the development of the country. At this meeting, 4G roads in Antioquia were at the center of the discussion, along with other issues of national interest.

Luz María Zapata, who acted as mediator in this historic meeting in Casa de Nariño, highlighted the atmosphere of friendly and respectful dialogue, although she recognized that differences persist between the president and the mayors on certain issues.

One of the points of contention is the future of the 4G roads in Antioquia, whose viability is still in doubt due to the position of the National Government. In an interview with EL COLOMBIANO, Zapata addressed several aspects related to this meeting and the expectations of cooperation between local authorities and the Executive.

The first face-to-face between Petro and the mayors addressed a wide range of issues, from safety and health to infrastructure and the environment. However, differences in prioritization of public investment became evident, especially with regard to 4G pathways.

Mayor Federico Gutiérrez, representing Antioquia, expressed his concern about the financing of these works, considered fundamental for regional progress. However, President Petro pointed out the need to prioritize investment in education, health and other social issues over road infrastructure.

Despite the discrepancies, the meeting made clear the willingness of both parties to collaborate in the search for viable solutions for the territories. The commitment of the National Government to strengthening citizen security was highlighted, as well as the importance of close coordination between mayors and the National Police.

Regarding the previous impasse between the president and the mayors, Zapata assured that he has never felt vetoes from the Government towards any local leader. Rather, he stressed the importance of maintaining an open and constructive dialogue between all parties involved in public management.

In short, the first meeting between Petro and the mayors represents an important step towards greater collaboration and understanding between the National Government and local authorities, in search of concrete solutions to the challenges facing the country in different areas.
