Eco-friendly terracotta jars where octopuses can find a safe refuge and a favorable environment for reproduction. Thus, in Talamone (Grosseto), in Maremma, a new project was born that aims to encourage the repopulation of the seas.
The “House of Octopus” project starts today from the “La Casa dei pesce” association. The project’s excellent testimonial is the actor Giovanni Storti, of the trio Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo. Storti has long been strongly involved in campaigns in favor of the environment and nature and has embraced the proposal from the Casa dei Pesci association and Paolo Fanciulli, an environmentalist fisherman. “Paolo’s enthusiasm is contagious – says Storti -. This is a project that creates awareness.
Being aware of our actions and understanding that what we do is important and has an impact on what surrounds us. If we destroy nature around us, we destroy ourselves.”
The project is scientifically supported by the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Siena. The presence of these animals (Octopus vulgaris) along the coasts of the Tuscan Maremma is also decreasing as a result of intensive fishing. Industrial fishing, also thanks to a legislative vacuum, has implemented new sampling techniques, the now well-known PVC “jars”, which have a high impact on the species, especially in the delicate reproductive moment. Today the pilot phase of the Octopus House project began with the positioning of 25-30 centimeter jars. The choice of terracotta jars is not random. “Fishing for octopus with an amphora is a thousand-year-old practice – says the president of the Casa dei Pesci Giovanni Contardi – it was also done by the Greeks and Romans.
We want to offer octopuses artificial dens, both a refuge and a suitable place for breeding. The idea is to put thousands of them in the water.” Paolo Fanciulli then looks further: “Our intent is to create a route along the road, with works of art and a large amphora to beautify the area. And then the new works that will be sculpted under the artistic direction of Emily Joung. We want to bring famous freedivers here, we think that sea protection and sustainable tourism go hand in hand.”
