The Maduro regime wants to negotiate sanctions with the US again.

The United States has announced the resumption of sanctions against Venezuela, citing the failure of President Nicolás Maduro and his representatives to fulfill their commitments made in the electoral roadmap agreement signed in Barbados in October 2023. This decision comes after careful review of the situation in Venezuela, where concerns were raised about the hindrance of the democratic opposition in registering their chosen candidate, as well as the harassment and detention of political opponents and members of civil society.

In response to the US State Department’s announcement, the president of the Chavista National Assembly spoke on national television, emphasizing the country’s commitment to dignity, decency, and adherence to the constitution. He also highlighted the series of bilateral meetings held between the Chavista delegation and the US representatives in various locations, expressing willingness to engage in dialogue while stressing the illegality and illegitimacy of the imposed sanctions.

The US delegation reportedly incorporated new officials and representatives from different departments in their meetings with Venezuela, while the Chavista side remained consistent with their stance on the need for dialogue and the lifting of sanctions. Despite this, the US government has decided to revoke the relief of oil sanctions on Venezuela, with General License No. 44 being replaced by License 44A as of April 17, 2024.

The situation between the US and Venezuela continues to be tense, with ongoing disagreements over the imposition of sanctions and the path towards free and fair elections in the country. As both sides maintain their positions, it remains to be seen how this latest development will impact the already strained relations between the two nations.
