TRIESTE. The oligarch Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko entered the new list of Russian businessmen considered sanctionable by the European Union on Wednesday 9 March.
The 143-meter sailing yacht stopped in Trieste for maintenance works will thus face seizure. In recent days Melnichenko had asked Fincantieri to quickly complete the operations on the ship, but the yacht “A” has remained stationary until today in the arsenal of the Julian port. At this point, qualified sources consider the blocking of the boat by the Finance Police to be imminent.
Melnichenko is part of the group of 14 other oligarchs included in the EU black list, which currently includes 40 people to be sanctioned because they are considered close to Vladimir Putin. Melnichenko is an industrialist with interests in fertilizer production and coal mining, through his companies EuroChem and Suek.
The text published in the Official Journal of the Union underlines that “on 24 February 2022, following the initial stages of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Melnichenko met, along with 36 businessmen, President Vladimir Putin and other members of the government Russian to discuss the impact of the course of action in light of Western sanctions.
The fact that he was invited to attend the meeting indicates that he is part of President Putin’s closest circle and that he supports or carries out actions or policies that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as the stability and security in Ukraine.
It also indicates that he is one of the leading entrepreneurs operating in economic sectors which constitute a significant source of income for the government of Russia, responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine. “
