China Prepares for Cold Wave and Heavy Snowfall: Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Issues Emergency Notice

As the Spring Festival holiday comes to an end, China is bracing for a cold wave and heavy snowfall that is expected to affect the country from west to east and north to south from February 17 to 22. The China Meteorological Administration has predicted that the temperature will fluctuate violently, with the 0°C temperature line pressing southward to southern Jiangsu, Anhui, southern Hunan, and southern Guizhou. The areas affected by the cold wave are also at risk of heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has issued an emergency notice on February 16, urging local agricultural and rural departments to strengthen their prevention and response work to minimize the impact and losses of the disaster.

During the cold wave, the temperature fluctuations and widespread rain and snow could cause freezing of flowering rapeseed, green wheat, open-field vegetables, fruit trees, and other crops. This could result in damage to agricultural facilities and hinder the production of livestock, poultry, and aquatic products. The ministry has emphasized the importance of implementing responsibilities to ensure a smooth start for spring plowing production.

Local agricultural and rural departments are required to closely monitor weather changes, analyze the impact of rain and snow weather on agricultural production, and propose specific preventive measures. Early warning information and response measures are to be released through multiple channels to ensure that production entities are informed and prepared for the impending cold wave.

Scientific and effective response measures are being put in place, including the formulation and improvement of technical plans by experts and the dispatch of scientific and technological teams to guide the implementation of cold and frost protection measures. In addition, organizations are strengthening the connection between production and sales to ensure a balanced supply of agricultural products.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is urging local authorities to take all necessary measures to protect crops, livestock, and poultry from the adverse effects of the cold wave and heavy snowfall. With careful planning and swift action, the ministry aims to minimize the impact on agricultural production and ensure a stable supply of essential agricultural products for the country.
