The Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office requests 34 years in prison for Pedro Castillo

The Public Ministry of Peru requested this Friday 34 years in prison for former President Pedro Castillo for “the crimes of rebellion, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public tranquility” in his failed attempt to close Parliament on December 7, 2022.

Likewise, for the crime of rebellion, he requested 25 years in prison against the former president of the Ministerial Cabinet Betssy Chávez Chino, the former ministers of Commerce and Interior, Roberto Sánchez Palomino and Willy Huerta Olivas, respectively, and the officers of the National Police, Manuel Lozada Morales , Jesús Venero Mellado and Eder Infanzón Gómez.

He also demanded 15 years in prison for former Prime Minister Aníbal Torres Vásquez for the same crime.

Dismissal and arrest

On December 7, 2022, the Congress of the Republic dismissed Pedro Castillo after his attempt to dissolve the legislative body and he was later arrested by the Police.

Since then, Castillo has been in preventive detention in the Barbadillo prison, located within the Directorate of Special Operations (Diroes) of the Ate district, in the province of Lima.

Dina Boluarte, who was the first vice president in the rural professor’s cabinet, took charge and thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand her resignation.

The protests, which took place between December 2022 and March 2023, left 59 civilians dead (48 in clashes and 11 due to traffic accidents and events linked to the blockade), as well as one police officer and six soldiers dead. With RT
