6,000 square meters of green in the test section
Ping’an Avenue is located within the Second Ring Road, starting from Dongsishitiao Bridge in the east and Guanyuan Bridge in the west, running through Dongcheng and Xicheng. It is 6.6 kilometers long and 40 meters wide. It was completed and opened to traffic in 1999. It is a major traffic artery in the east-west direction of Beijing. On both sides of Ping’an Avenue, there are many historical and cultural highlights such as Nanluoguxiang, Jingshan, Dongsishitiao to Dongsishitiao, which are important carriers for recording urban changes and witnessing social development.

Before the reconstruction, the width of the pedestrian walkway in the test section was less than 1 meter, but now the width of the walkway has increased to an average of 3.5 meters or more. In the 420-meter test section, a total of 366 trees and shrubs of 16 species were planted, the hedgerow ribbon was 2,905 square meters, the ground cover was more than 3,000 square meters of flowers, and the vertical greening was 310 linear meters. Mainly native tree species such as Chinese locust tree, white wax, Acer truncatum, Luan tree, ginkgo, crabapple, etc., form a natural forest landscape with shady trees. Make full use of the limited green space, and adopt the multi-level greening configuration mode of “trees-shrubs-vines-flowers-grass”, which greatly improves the green quantity and green viewing rate of the site and maximizes the ecological benefits. Multi-level and large-scale greening has turned the originally empty and unbalanced street into a tree-lined, cordial and pleasant green avenue.

At the same time, the road chamfer was reduced at the intersection of the test section, and a cross-street safety island was added to make pedestrians walk more calmly; the bus booth that originally occupied the sidewalk was moved to the side of the bus lane, which reduced the interference to the sidewalk and ensured cycling continuous.
On the premise of ensuring the width of passage, divide the sidewalk into facility belts, passage areas, and green areas, regulate bicycle parking and facility locations, improve the pavement quality of sidewalks, ensure barrier-free traffic, add flowers and trees along the street, and improve pedestrian comfort.
The original open space on the street corner has become an open tree array square, fitness activity area and urban public space under the shade of trees. The additional 4000 square meters of green space and 500 square meters of fitness activity venues are evenly distributed on both sides of the subway entrance and along the street, like a “urban living room”.
At present, the renovation and upgrading of 1.4 kilometers from Pingan Li to Guanyuan Bridge has been completed. Xicheng District will accelerate the construction of the project as planned to ensure that the Xicheng Section of Ping’an Avenue will be fully unveiled before the end of the year.
