Mexican worker dies in Providence Village Works Incident
The dreams of Jesús Pérez Vázquez, a 29-year-old Mexican worker, were tragically cut short last Thursday in Providence Village, Texas. Pérez died in the hospital following a work incident where he and his partner fell into a sinkhole while working on a water tank last Thursday. His partner remains hospitalized in critical condition, trying to recover from the incident. As a result, the city is still grappling with water problems in the community and issuing warnings to residents to avoid tap water due to the ongoing issues with the water system.
Family and coworkers remember Pérez as a happy, dedicated worker, who loved construction and wanted to return to his home of San Luis Potosí. The devastating loss has left Pérez’s wife, María Alvarado, and his brother Uriel Pérez reeling.
María Alvarado shares that her husband’s death has left her utterly alone and devastated. Her husband was her true companion, who spoiled her and showed her immense affection. His loss leaves her with no desire to go on, as Pérez was the joy of her house and they had so many dreams and plans for the future.
Uriel Pérez recalls his brother as a father figure and a man of good character, always attentive to the family, responsible, and eager to succeed. He reflects on Pérez’s goals of returning to Mexico and laments that they will now remain unfulfilled.
A GoFundMe account has been established by the Pérez family to help raise funds for funeral expenses.
Beyond the personal tragedy for the Pérez family, Providence Village continues to face difficulties with its water system, which the deceased and his partner were working to repair. Residents are urged not to drink tap water and to use disposable plates and utensils, only bottled water, or boiled water to prevent any harm. The city is also distributing drinking bottles of water while repairs are in process.
This incident comes just a few months after another worker from California, Jesús Contreras Benítez, died in a workplace accident. His family, friends, and coworkers are still mourning that tragic accident.
