Cuban Woman Risked Her Life to Seek Treatment in the United States

Damilsy Medina Iznaga, a Cuban woman suffering from chronic kidney disease, made a daring journey to the United States in search of life-saving medical treatment. In an interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón, Damilsy shared the harrowing details of her journey and her experiences in both Cuba and the United States.

Before leaving Cuba, Damilsy underwent peritoneal dialysis treatment in Havana, a privilege not accessible to all Cubans. However, facing a deteriorating quality of life due to scarce medical supplies and the risk of infection from reused equipment, Damilsy made the difficult decision to seek treatment abroad.

With her life depending on a machine for at least 10 hours a day, Damilsy and her husband embarked on a risky journey through Nicaragua, with the goal of reaching the United States. Upon arriving in the U.S., Damilsy was pleasantly surprised by the opportunities offered by the American health system for individuals in her physical condition.

Despite the lack of recommendations to emigrate, Damilsy’s determination to seek a cure led her to discover the options available to low-income individuals through the American insurance system. She found that emergency care and access to hemodialysis were readily available, providing her with the treatment she desperately needed.

Damilsy and her husband initially feared a hostile reception in the United States, but they were surprised by the solidarity and support shown by doctors and institutions. They received the help they needed to navigate the complexities of the American healthcare system and pursue a better quality of life.

Damilsy’s journey serves as a reminder of the lengths individuals are willing to go to access essential medical care, and the importance of healthcare systems that prioritize the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
