The sociologist Vittorio Filippi analyzes the messages disseminated on social networks. “Adolescent restlessness that arises from an educational deficit”

The analysis

“We will have to deal with it for a while. We are facing one of the forms in which adolescent restlessness manifests itself today ». The sociologist Vittorio Filippi thus reads the fights and provocations between gangs of children who face each other over the weekend in the historic center.

In short, we need to worry – for example about the “educational deficit” – but not too much, certainly not taking it out only with young people, “the responsibility is ours, of the adults”. Over time it will pass, and take other forms. Today, however, it is a phenomenon that Treviso is suddenly clashing with, “but attention is new for our city, not for others, where it has been happening for some time”, adds Filippi.

“Most of these are rivalries that manifest themselves physically in certain places and at certain times, usually those of the marshalling yards such as the stations. But there is a second level, that of the network, where the rumors go by, where gangs are organized and rivalries are ignited ».

Fights are certainly not a new topic, they were there even twenty years ago, and always between companies that assumed different social and political positions, or perhaps frequented rival squares. “But the network has changed its characteristics, it has given the possibility of immediacy, organizational lightness and volatility”, he continues.

In short, a post on Tik Tok is enough to make an appointment and go wild in a few minutes to the sounds of kicks and punches. With a lot of public that that same post has read and shared.

“In fact, they are negative, adolescent and apolitical forms of aggregation. There is clearly an educational deficit behind us, where we find too weak presences of the school and of the family, who are unable to control the messages conveyed through the smartphone », continues Filippi. It is also difficult to hypothesize a solution, “there is no solution to everything.

In this historical moment the anxiety takes this form, perhaps in a few years we will find ourselves facing a different manifestation of the same state of adolescent crisis ». Yesterday the response of the institutions consisted in the deployment of about fifty agents in the historic center, who have done a certain effect on passers-by, «is a form of deterrence.

As a citizen, sociologist and teacher I am not worried, I am sad and embittered, because those children are wasting many beautiful moments of adolescence ».
