Starting next spring, a Treviso-based company will carry out this “green” strategy against the invasion of pigeons and corvids
BELLUNO. Too many birds around the Belluno hospitals: Ulss Dolomiti hires a falconer to drive away the pigeons.
To maintain conditions of integrity, adequate hygiene and decorum in the Belluno hospitals, the health company was forced to launch a market survey to find someone able to drive away pigeons and other birds, potential sources of dirt and infectious diseases, which have nested in the structures.
At the end of the research, the intervention was entrusted, for 17 thousand euros, to the Denis Vettorazzo company from Cison di Valmarino, which will bring the ancient art of falconry to the Ulss.
In the first months of 2022, therefore, a standardized monitoring of the numerical consistency of the pigeons present will be carried out, in order to proceed with an estimate of the population density and, indirectly determine the number of pairs present (equal to about 1/3 of the present population. ). For each of the identified areas, an adequate number of squares (20% of the total) will be chosen, according to random criteria, within which the surveys involving the direct counting of individuals will be conducted. In the spring / summer period, deterrent interventions are planned through the trained raptor, but only for deterrent purposes.
The technicians in charge will manage the falconry interventions and will evaluate any nests to be removed during the work phase.
“Different types of intervention were evaluated and it was decided to resort to a natural method that involves the use of hawks. A green choice, respectful of nature, which will also ensure the safety of the helipads and the cleanliness of hospital outbuildings. ”, Comments the general manager, Maria Grazia Carraro.
