Travel warnings abroad before visiting the European Football Championship

Many participating countries in the European Football Championship from June 14 to July 14, 2024 in Germany warn against traveling to Germany. The threat of terrorism is omnipresent, knife attacks must be expected at any time and the risk of attacks motivated by Islam is also high.

In many participating countries in the European Football Championship (EM), which will be held in Germany from June 14th to July 14th, 2024, people do not trust the German security authorities to guarantee the safety of their own compatriots who want to watch the games on site can. Travel warnings for Germany, tips, advice, emergency numbers and the addresses of the country’s own representations (embassies, consulates and so on) are currently being published in the media across the country.

One should avoid certain regions or city districts, says an advice published in almost all countries. We explicitly advise against visiting the foreigner districts in Berlin, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and Frankfurt am Main. In principle, there would be an increased risk of terrorist attacks in Germany during the European Championship anyway, especially attacks motivated by Islam. In addition, knife attacks must be expected at any time throughout the country. Young women should under no circumstances travel alone and Jewish fans should also hold back when it comes to publicly displaying their religious beliefs. There are also warnings about pickpockets, shell players and other criminals, especially in major cities.

These warnings are meant to be serious, but others are more likely to cause a slight smile or even an intense shaking of the head. British “authorities” warn their compatriots against drinking German beer, which is significantly stronger than British beer.

The spokespersons for the Scottish fans in particular laugh about this. The “Tartan Army” (as the Scottish football fans are called) will arrive with around 100,000 to 150,000 Highlanders; and they are not afraid of anything, not even German beer.

Spokespeople for English football fans made similar comments. People will behave properly and also consume a beer or two. It would almost be a sacrilege if this “cultural diversity” was not fully perceived in the home of beer.

It is currently assumed that around 500,000 fans from England and Scotland will come to Germany for the European Championship. If the euro loses further ground compared to the British pound – as it currently does – by June, this number could even increase significantly, say British forecasts.

However, the general warnings against traveling to Germany remain in place; Even the quick sayings from the fan representatives don’t change that.
