Turin, one in three policemen cannot go on patrol: “The problem? Above all the age”

One in three traffic policemen in Turin is unsuitable for patrol service. This was communicated this morning in the municipal commission by the councilor of the municipal police Gianna Pentenero. In all, there are 516 civichs out of 1600 which for various reasons cannot be put on the road. Then there are the 131 administrative staff. And so the suitable staff is made up of 998 people, who every day are put to check the territory and carry out local services. To which now 50 new hires have been added who are still in the training phase and therefore are not yet fully active.

“One of the main reasons why five hundred police officers cannot perform certain services is their age – said Pentenero – Once they are over 50, the civics can decide whether to accept patrols or not”. Others, on the other hand, have a medical certificate certifying their inability to provide service. However, there is not only a problem of age but also of the number of resources to be used. The councilor recalled that an organic plan would serve as many as 1800 policemen and that today with the staff available it is difficult to control the nightlife areas, to be present in the suburbs, to cover night shifts. So now the administration wants to hire. A response from the ministry is expected at the end of February: the goal is to use the expired ranking to insert new forces.

Numerous comments were surprised by the number of unsuitable brigades. “There are many – admits the president of the Budget Commission Anna Borasi – but the administration is working to strengthen patrols and give a greater service to the city”, also affirms the president of the Budget Commission Anna Borasi. While today it is still very difficult to guarantee their presence as civics even in the nightlife areas and in the suburbs. “Our goal to date – concluded the councilor Pentenero – is in any case to extend the shifts by providing overtime”.
