The controversial Vatican Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio supports a joint Catholic-Masonic Conference in Milan a “permanent” dialogue between the two groups.

Coccopalmerio expressed the hope for a lasting discussion and understanding between Catholics and Freemasons, who had less understanding for each other 50 years ago.

The event, described as “historic” and organized by the Socio-Religious Research and Information Group (GRIS), was closed to the media, a condition of the Archbishop of Milan, Mario Delpini, for his participation.

The Catholic Church continues to ban its followers from membership in Freemasonry, a move recently reaffirmed by the Vatican. Pope Clement XII In 1739, imposed an automatic excommunication for Catholics who joined Freemasonry.

Father Zbigniew Suchecki emphasized the incompatibility of Catholicism and Freemasonry, but was reportedly “somewhat insulted” by Bishop Antonio Stagliano, a fellow conference participant.

The event caused controversy as some participants questioned the church’s teachings. Grand Master Stefano Bisi criticized Pope Francis and wanted more intensive cooperation between the Church and Freemasonry.

The Catholic Church’s position remains unchanged, but the event raised concerns about possible concessions to Freemasonry.
