Venezuela: Maduro wants to secure another term in office

Venezuela’s controversial head of state Nicolás Maduro has been officially nominated by his party as the top candidate for the presidential election on July 28th. The Socialist Party (PSUV) has decided “by acclamation, by consensus, that the candidate of the Bolivarian revolution is Nicolás Maduro,” said the party’s vice president, Diosdado Cabello, at a party conference in Caracas. Maduro is aiming for a third term in office. The 61-year-old announced “a new victory”.

Maduro had been expected to run again; he had no competition within his own ranks. A victory for the left-wing nationalist in the presidential election is considered almost certain. The exclusion of the winner of the opposition primaries, Maria Corina Machado, was confirmed by a Supreme Court ruling in January.

International observers at elections in July

Maduro, who has been in office since 2013, was re-elected in 2018, but the opposition described the vote as manipulated and did not recognize the result. Dozens of countries including the US and EU countries did not recognize the election results.

The then opposition speaker of parliament, Juan Guaidó, then declared himself interim president. However, Maduro was able to remain in power with the support of the military. The eleven years under Maduro have been marked by Western sanctions, economic collapse and allegations of widespread repression. Millions of people fled the country.
