VHS Essen asks: What is artificial intelligence doing to us?

Essen The VHS Essen has published its new semester program. Because the topic of artificial intelligence concerns many people, AI is one of the focal points.

How do I deal with right-wing slogans when I encounter them? How can I use artificial intelligence (AI) and how will it change our everyday lives? How do I mentally cope with the threatening news that is reaching us about climate change?

The new semester program at the Essen Adult Education Center (VHS), which is now available everywhere, provides answers to pressing questions. The spring semester begins in mid-February, and registrations for courses, seminars, workshops and excursions are now possible – either using the registration card included with the printed program or online at www.vhs-essen.de.

VHS Essen: New course program with more than 1000 offerings

The semester program includes more than 1,000 offerings in the areas of languages, politics/society, health/medicine, art and culture or business and careers. The program’s motto this semester is “diversity.”

“For us, ‘diversity’ is not just an arbitrary term, but rather a lived reality,” says outgoing VHS director Michael Imberg. He turned 65 at the beginning of the year and will officially retire in the spring; the search for a successor is ongoing. Imberg: “A VHS that wants to live up to its standards must be based on the diverse expectations of the people living in its city.”

Associations are looking for answers to legal questions about the Internet

The topic of “artificial intelligence” in particular is currently affecting many people and is creating a great demand for corresponding educational offerings: “An online workshop on how artificial intelligence will change our everyday lives is already almost fully booked,” reports VHS spokesman Nikolaos Georgakis . The lecture will take place on Tuesday, March 5th. A weekly seminar that basically examines the topic of “artificial intelligence” will take place from February 13th; This course can be claimed as educational leave from the employer.

Around 40,000 people use the VHS offer in one semester; This means that the number of users is back at a level that corresponds to the time before Corona.

Participation numbers are back to pre-Corona levels

But it’s not just “artificial intelligence” that raises questions among citizens, normal use of the Internet also creates a high need for information: “Clubs in particular make inquiries about the rights to use images or how to deal with personal rights,” reports Imberg. Accordingly, there is an educational offer: “Legally secure on the Internet” is the name of the lecture on Wednesday, April 24th, which will, among other things, cover data protection, rights and content limits.

In addition, the VHS also offers the entire range of language and craft courses, lectures and excursions in the spring. The topic of “self-care” is becoming increasingly important; In addition to classics such as autogenic training or yoga, there are instructions for sharpening your own awareness of your own needs and a taster workshop on the topic of self-efficacy and mindfulness against stress.

New on offer is a writing course for mothers and fathers who would like to write down their own birth story: “Writing for Parents: Our (Birth) Story” is the name of the 15-part seminar, which starts in mid-February and is by the Essen journalist and author Berit Hullmann is headed.

Speaking of family: The VHS offers extra courses and seminars aimed at children and young people, for example painting for children, electric guitar for beginners or ten-finger typing basics are just a few of the offers. These courses include a 30% student discount and are often free. “We also want to reach and inspire the younger generations with our program. Not only are our offers diverse, but also our target group,” says Michael Imberg.

Registration is now possible via registration card in the program booklet or online at www.vhs-essen.de possible.
