A couple from the US state of Georgia are being prosecuted for child neglect after they let their children (aged 5 and 7) wander around for hours on a beach in Florida while they themselves were sleeping drunk.

Police officers tried to wake Timothy Stephens and Alyssia Langley, both 27, eight times on a beach in Daytona Beach on Saturday after being called to the scene by bystanders. “Hey, police here! Wake up,” an officer shouts several times in Stephens’ ear.

Once they were able to wake up, the couple also appeared confused and drunk. Asked where their children were, a stumbling Stephens could only vaguely gesture toward the beach. “You don’t know where your children are?” the officer then asks incredulously. The children were found a short time later in the swimming pool of a nearby hotel.

Stephens then also tries to run away from the officers, before drunkenly falling into the sand. The couple is now accused of child neglect.

“I couldn’t believe what I read in the report,” said Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “I don’t understand why you get really drunk and let a five-year-old and a seven-year-old wander around. If you wonder why children sometimes grow up a certain way, you need to look at who raised them. And it’s clear that these two clowns shouldn’t even be responsible for themselves, let alone two children.”
