HAMBURG (dpa-AFX) – Because of the continued warning strike in local transport, there are hardly any buses or subways in Hamburg on Friday. “The elevated railway operations staff has just decided that operations in both the subway and bus areas cannot begin today,” the company announced on Friday. The decisive factors here are safety aspects and the requirement to provide passengers with a reliable service. As on Thursday, all school buses are on the road.
The 48-hour warning strike by the Verdi union in Hamburg lasts until Saturday morning. Verdi wants to increase the pressure in ongoing negotiations about collective agreements at the municipal transport companies Hochbahn and VHH. The Hochbahn operates the subway and the majority of bus routes in Hamburg, while the Hamburg-Holstein Transport Authority (VHH) mainly operates bus routes in the Schleswig-Holstein area surrounding the Hanseatic city. The S-Bahn and Eisenbahn GmbH AKN are not affected by the strike.
Together with other unions, social and environmental associations, Verdi wants to organize a “climate strike” in more than 100 German cities on Friday – including in Hamburg./cgl/DP/ngu
