Why was there no Sanalejo on the first Saturday of January 2024?

Why was there no Sanalejo on the first Saturday of January 2024?

The artisans of the traditional Sanalejo Market were negatively surprised when they found out that the event, which for decades has been held on the first Saturday of each month, would not begin in January as usual, but would have to be postponed until February.

This mishap, apparently, was due to the financial situation left by the outgoing Municipal Administration. Due to lack of resources, the first meeting of 2024 had to be scheduled for February.

“It is the first time in history that this has happened, that we start the year without Sanalejo; all because of the bad administration that came out,” said the representative of the Artisans Board, Elkin Usquiano.

The Ministry of Culture is seeking to recover spaces for dialogue and build bridges to dignify the work of the artisans of Parque Bolívar, so that they develop their activities in a clean, safe place and where their economy is strengthened.

“I want them to know me and always look each other in the eyes. I came to the secretariat to regain trust. It is no secret that the outgoing administration promised them a Sanalejo in January, but did not leave us the resources. Despite the financial outlook, we are going to make Sanalejo resurface,” said the Secretary of Citizen Culture, Manuel Córdoba.

The Mayor’s Office of Medellín will maintain permanent communication with the artisans, so that the work is done in an articulated manner and ties are strengthened; which will allow spaces and activities like Sanalejo to be recovered.
