Without ‘Real ID’ you will not be able to fly within the US: we tell you why and how to obtain one

Starting May 7, 2025, a special identification card, known as Real ID, will be required for domestic air travel within the United States. This identification will also be necessary to visit certain federal facilities and access nuclear power plants on US soil.

The Real ID requirement was established by a law passed by Congress in 2005, with the aim of enhancing security standards for driver’s licenses and identification cards used for domestic flights, federal facility visits, and nuclear power plant access. Although the implementation of Real ID was originally set for 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic caused several delays until it was finally put into effect in line with the latest guidelines from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Real ID Act was passed to establish federal standards for the security features of driver’s licenses and identification cards. Before this law, each state had its own rules regarding ID requirements. To obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card, applicants must provide proof of their legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, legal residence, and two proofs of address.

While many states began issuing IDs that meet Real ID requirements shortly after the law was enacted, those who do not have a compliant ID will need to apply for one before May 7, 2025. Documentation required for a Real ID application includes proof of legal name, Social Security number, residence, and two forms of address, all in their original forms.

Some of the acceptable documents for obtaining a Real ID include a valid passport, birth certificate, permanent resident card, and U.S. naturalization certificate. It is recommended that applicants verify requirements with their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and start the application process early to avoid last-minute rush.

In addition to Real ID, there are other types of identification accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic air travel, including a U.S. passport, DHS trusted traveler card, U.S. Department of Defense ID, and various other forms of identification.

Individuals without a Real ID can still fly, access federal facilities, and enter nuclear power plants until May 6, 2025. It is crucial for travelers to ensure they have the necessary identification well in advance to comply with the upcoming requirements.
