In 2023, the net professional income of the working population aged 20 to 64 in the Flemish Region amounted to an average of 2,732 euros per month. Between 2006 and 2023, net professional income increased by 9 percent, which is an average of 0.5 percent per year. This was evident from figures from Statistics Flanders on Wednesday.

To be clear: because the figures were calculated on the basis of the 2023 EU-SILC survey, the figures refer to the incomes of the previous year, i.e. 2022. More than 42 percent of workers aged 20 to 64 had a professional income of 2,000 to 3,000 euros per month in 2023, compared to exactly 42 percent in 2006. A third (33 percent) of workers aged 20 to 64 had a professional income in 2023 of more than 3,000 euros per month. In 2006 this was less than a quarter (23 percent).

Between 2021 and 2022, net real professional income rose quite sharply (+4 percent). But between 2022 and 2023, professional income fell by 2 percent. This has to do with the fact that wages only respond to the sharply increased inflation after some time.

The average professional income of working men was 2,964 euros in 2023, or 3 percent higher than in 2006. Among working women, the professional income increased much more strongly – by 22 percent – from an average of 2,035 euros in 2006 to 2,479 euros in 2023.

The total net personal income of the population over 18 years of age in Flanders in 2023 was 2,179 euros per month. Between 2022 and 2023, average personal income fell by almost 4 percent. Statistics Flanders defines this total net personal income as the sum of professional income, pension, unemployment benefit and other personal incomes, from which direct taxes and social contributions have been deducted.
