it is not necessary to remind what Ivan Korčok represented in the presidential elections. In addition to the content offer, which moves Slovakia mentally further, the way in which this content is communicated is also important. Not only did he firmly stand behind the values of the Western world, not only did he stand up for the principles of liberal democracy, but he did all this with great commitment, with an authentic interest in Slovakia and the people, and finally, with a big heart. That means a lot.
Ivan Korčok brought a new dimension to the presidential race, with which he addressed a large number of people. Once again, a wave of hope and determination to fight for change rose up, once again people began to say that there is meaning and perspective here. Ivan Korčok awakened the best in us. Either on a political level, when he united conservative and liberal parties, or on a social level, when he gave people hope for decent and practical politics. The connection of various democratic currents is essential for the future, and Ivan Korčok showed that it is still possible today.
Every loss, especially in such an important election, brings a feeling of helplessness or disillusionment. But if we are serious about Slovakia, we must continue despite the unfavorable result. Frustration or resignation must not be our response to arrogance and rudeness. Thanks to Mr. Korčok, we caught a new breath. Now it’s up to us to show the same determination, commitment and interest that he did in the presidential campaign. Only then, if we build on the strength we have recently regained, can we as a civil society create a counterweight to the current government power. And maybe one day, create the kind of atmosphere and conditions from which a competent democratic government will emerge. It cannot end with this loss.
Mr. Korčok, losing in the second round of the presidential election in such a way that you were cynically called a man of war must be depressing. I consider it all the more important to appreciate what you brought to the election by your behavior in formulating challenges and naming the problems of our country. You have launched something important in our society that we can draw from in defending democratic values and principles. You have awakened our passion – and for that, Mr. Korčok, we thank you.
