American basketball is under the spell of Caitlin Clark. She was recently selected as number 1 during the WNBA Draft and now the 22-year-old American has also signed a multi-million contract with sports giant Nike worth 28 million dollars (26.1 million euros) for 8 years. Clark also immediately gets her own shoe, which is extremely rare.

It is no coincidence that Nike was on Clark’s sleeve. The point guard recently became the all-time leading scorer in the NCAA college competition with Iowa and set a viewership record at the end of March. For a while, the US was no longer captivated by the NBA, but by the new attraction Caitlin Clark. With more than 18 million TV viewers, the NCAA final against South Carolina was the most watched basketball match in the US in five years.

Her admirable performance earned her a spot in the WNBA with the Indiana Fever, Clark became – how could it be otherwise – the first player chosen in the Draft. All major brands now wanted to sign her, but Clark chooses Nike. That is the brand she was already under contract with, but that contract expired at the end of the college season. Now she remains loyal to the sports giant, which is willing to pay a lot of money for this.

Clark would sign an eight-year contract worth 28 million dollars (more than 26 million euros). How could it be otherwise that it is immediately the most lucrative deal ever in women’s basketball. Quite meager compared to the monster contracts that the men sign, but a serious step in the evolution of women’s basketball.

Own shoe

Clark not only signs a multi-million contract with Nike, she also gets her own shoe. She becomes only the third woman ever to receive that honor. Sabrina Ionescu of New York Liberty also has her own shoe: the Nike Sabrina 1. Her teammate Stewart has her own shoe from a competitor: the Puma Stewie. Clark now becomes the third player with her own shoe.
