The riots after the Süper Lig game between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce Istanbul have some serious consequences for the clubs and players involved.
Host Trabzonspor must play six home games without spectators and also pay a fine of almost 90,000 euros, the Turkish Football Association TFF announced on Wednesday (April 3, 2024).
Fans stormed the lawn
In addition, Fenerbahce players Jayden Oosterwolde and goalkeeper Irfan Can Ebribayat were suspended for one game and fined by the TFF disciplinary committee.
On March 17th, after Fenerbahce’s 3-2 away win, a number of Trabzonspor fans stormed onto the pitch. Oosterwoolde kicked a masked Trabzonspor fan, and other Fenerbahce professionals also defended themselves: Bright Osayi-Samuel hit a fan but, unlike his teammate, was not sanctioned. His actions “did not reach the threshold for a violation of the disciplinary rules,” it said.
Long list of violent crimes
During the attacks on the celebrating Fenerbahce professionals, goalkeeper Dominik Livkovic, among others, received a punch in the face. Twelve rioters were arrested, and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino called the scenes “completely unacceptable.”
The incidents join a long list of acts of violence in Turkish football. In December, after an attack on a referee, play had to be suspended for a week.
