From Sofia, via Washington, Beijing and Vienna: the 22-year-old from South Tyrol continues to make tennis history
(LaPresse) Jannik Sinner triumphed at the Australian Open, becoming the first Italian tennis player to raise the Melbourne Slam trophy to the sky: one of the most prestigious internationally together with Wimbledon, Roland Garros and the US Open. But the feat of 22 year old from San Candido it is only the culmination of a series of successes that have characterized his sporting career.
His first title dates back to 2020 when, at just 19 years old, he triumphed at the ATP 250 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Then the following year came the exploit with four trophies put on the board: the ATP 250 in Adelaide, Australia, the ATP 500 in Washington, in the United States, the ATP 250 in Antwerp, Belgium, and new ATP 250 in Sofia, where he was reconfirmed champion. 2022, however, was more complicated for the South Tyrolean who only won the ATP 250 tournament in Umag, Croatia. Finally, 2023 was worth remembering.
Sinner defeated the competition by winning the ATP 250 in Montpellier, France, the Masters 1000 in Montreal, Canada, the ATP 500 in Beijing, China and the ATP 500 in Vienna, Austria. But we cannot forget the final played and lost against Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals in Turin and the success in the Davis Cup with the Italian national team led by Filippo Volandri. The Australian triumph against Daniil Medvedev, beaten in a comeback with a score of 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3, is the icing on the cake: the end of a long battle and the continuation of an extraordinary adventure among the greats of the racket.
