Otranto, 10 July 2021 – Tragedy at the Bay of the Turks, a well-known tourist destination nearby Otranto (Lecce), in the heart of the Salento. A young woman couple from Cerignola (Foggia), two boys of 27 and 29, was found dead today at sea. There is also a helicopter, the fire brigade and the harbor master’s office on site. The bodies of the two young people have been recovered. The bodies of the two young people have been recovered, as we learn some swimmers have tried to rescue them, bringing them to the shore and trying to revive them. But all attempts to save the young couple proved in vain. The victims were on vacation in Salento, they were part of a group of six boys.

The dynamics

We try to reconstruct the dynamics of what happened: it is not excluded that the two young people may have fallen from the cliff, falling from the cliff as they were about to dive. Among the hypotheses also that one died in an attempt to save the other from the strong currents: in that body of water in 2013 a 10-year-old girl lost her life. And the inlet, one of the most suggestive of Salento, in the oasis of Alimini Lakes, unfortunately it is not new to similar incidents.

The woman who fell off the cliff

A couple of days ago a 60-year-old woman from Sondrio fell from the highest part of the cliff, due to a false movement during an excursion with her husband. Two patrol boats from the Port Authority immediately ran to the spot. Due to the inaccessible area from the ground, the 118 medical staff was brought to the scene on board a rubber dinghy. The woman was immediately transferred in red code to the hospital in Scorrano. Baia dei Turchi is so called because it is believed that in the 15th century the Saracen warriors landed in this inlet during the siege of Otranto.
