Original title: Beijing will use the Winter Olympics and other scenarios to carry out hydrogen energy demonstration applications

Hydrogen is the ultimate choice for clean energy, and the development of the hydrogen energy industry is a “green energy industry” that is included in the “Beijing’s “Fourteenth Five-Year Plan” High-precision Industry Development Plan”. Beijing is seizing the three major opportunities of the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the demonstration application of the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Paralympic Games, and the transformation of regional industrial structure. Demonstration and application in many fields and full scenarios, driving the technological progress of the entire industry chain and the development of industrial scale and commercialization.

Fuel cell vehicles are a relatively mature application in the hydrogen energy industry. After more than ten years of cultivation, the fuel cell vehicle industry in Beijing has established a sound industrial foundation. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration consists of 7 districts including Daxing District and Changping District in Beijing, Tianjin Binhai New District, Tangshan City and Baoding City in Hebei Province, Binzhou City and Zibo City in Shandong Province, etc. Urban agglomerations were formally approved as the first batch of national demonstration urban agglomerations in August this year. During the four-year demonstration period, the state will adopt the method of “reward for compensation”, and rewards will be given in accordance with the completion of mission objectives of the demonstration city group.

Beijing will firmly seize the opportunity of the construction of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei fuel cell vehicle demonstration city cluster, fight for the R&D and innovation of fuel cell vehicles, build a coordinated, independent and controllable industrial system across the chain, and strive for the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan Realize the scale of 10,000 cars. In terms of scenario innovation, it will focus on the passenger transport service, cross-regional freight dedicated line and urban cold chain logistics of the Beijing Winter Olympics, carry out demonstration application projects, and explore the establishment of a sustainable business model.

It is understood that Beijing is giving full play to its leading role in scientific and technological innovation, key fuel cell vehicle components and vehicle R&D and manufacturing to build the Beijing-Tianjin-Baoding-Zibo industrial development chain and the Beijing-Baoding-Binzhou hydrogen energy supply chain. Yanqing District, Tianjin Binhai New District, Tangshan City, Hebei Province, and Baoding City have respectively built four characteristic demonstration zones for the Winter Olympics, port area, ore and steel and building materials transportation.

This is the hydrogen fuel cell bus that will be put into use during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in Beijing’s Yanqing competition area. There is no difference in appearance between it and an ordinary intercity bus, but when you open its side door, you can see an energy storage device similar to a petrol truck. It is reported that six hydrogen storage tanks can run 500 kilometers at a time. Moreover, it can be started at minus 30°, which overcomes the problem of insufficient battery power release in ordinary trams under low temperature conditions.

According to Wang Feng, a fuel cell system engineer, hydrogen enters the engine through a pipeline from the hydrogen storage system, and undergoes an electrochemical reaction with air. The generated electrical energy can directly provide kinetic energy to the vehicle, and can also charge the power battery. During the Beijing Winter Olympics, about 212 hydrogen energy battery buses will be put into use to provide services for athletes’ travel and rest.
