The game in Darmstadt was also marked by the death of Franz Beckenbauer. In the afternoon, the clubs in the Bundesliga had already remembered the great idol with a minute’s silence and other tributes.
In the center circle of the arenas, a large, round banner was rolled out that showed Beckenbauer as a player – next to it was the Bundesliga logo and a mourning ribbon. “Rest in peace, Emperor,” was what was written on the scoreboard during the game between 1. FC Köln and 1. FC Heidenheim, for example. Teams wore mourning ribbon. The start of the 17th matchday between FC Bayern Munich and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was in memory of the greatest German footballer, who died last Sunday at the age of 78.
There will be a big memorial ceremony for FC Bayern, at which the Munich native became a legend as a player, coach and president, with numerous guests of honor from politics, culture and sport as well as numerous companions in the Allianz Arena on Friday next week. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will take part and give a speech. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will also be there in Munich.

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) praised Beckenbauer in a guest commentary for the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” and highlighted his ability to empathize with any situation. Schröder (79) recalled an experience he shared with the football icon in the garden of the German embassy in Afghanistan.
There, Beckenbauer stood in front of a team of students. “Everyone in bright yellow jerseys, he should compete against them. “But I need reinforcements,” he said and pushed the ball to me. I wore a bulletproof vest under my shirt. “You can imagine what fun it was,” Schröder reported.
Beckenbauer wasn’t just unique on the pitch. “He was a person with a big heart whose commitment to social causes was as admirable as his talent on the field,” wrote Schröder. The FC Bayern Munich world champion’s commitment to sport and his social contributions have touched the lives of many people around the world.
