LAFC GM John Thorrington Addresses Carlos Vela’s Contract Situation

Los Angeles, CA – The future of star forward Carlos Vela at LAFC is still uncertain, as the team navigates the limitations imposed by MLS rules on player salaries. Vela, who is not currently one of the three Designated Players allowed on the team, is seeking a significant salary that exceeds the league’s cap.

In a recent interview, LAFC General Manager John Thorrington acknowledged the challenges in negotiating Vela’s contract renewal. “Carlos agrees that we can continue. It is very difficult in our league to do everything we want, but we have great respect for him, great appreciation for what he has done in our history, I hope we can continue and we are still in those conversations,” said Thorrington.

Thorrington emphasized the importance of finding a solution that aligns with both the player’s expectations and the league’s regulations. “The reason is mainly based on the rules of our league, we were trying this entire period to find something that we could offer, do the best we can for the player. Carlos is the first star of our club, he is a big part of our history and we are trying to find a solution. The question is what can we offer and what does it ask for and we need to align where possible,” he explained.

Despite rumors linking Vela to a potential move to Cruz Azul, Thorrington reaffirmed the team’s commitment to retaining the Mexican forward. “We have great respect for him and great appreciation for what he’s done in our history,” he said.
